As long as it was not raining those waterhole hoppings were the best options \O

Gladly only a couple of cars were parked on the parking lot so we headed forward and were a bit shocked about the low water level, however, at that time we thought it was because of the less rainfall but later on we realized that the drainage was broken and gladly same had been repaired by now.

However, it was still enough water left to attract birds and so we positioned ourselves in the hide and scanned the area and first we discovered lots of jacanas and even a couple of juveniles could be seen as well.

Image

Image

A grey heron soon appeared on the scene as well

Image

only to start the hunting process

Image

and also a green backed heron came out of his hideaway.

Image

We noticed also a lot of pied kingfishers in the air trying to search for fish and finally one was successful and it took quite a while until same had been swallowed.

Image

Terrapins were taking a sunbath

Image

and to our delight also a couple of squacco herons landed as well relatively close by

Image

so Timon could again snap happily away.

Image

Finally the squacco turned also into hunting mode

Image

and also the green backed heron was now willing to present itself a bit closer.

We also spotted a black crake but same was indeed difficult to photograph as same was very hectic

Image

but gladly the jacana chicks were totally relaxed

Image

and so we could observe them extensively extreme close.

Image

The green backed heron landed on one of the photogenic branches you could discovered everywhere in the lake

Image

only to be chased away by one of the squaccos

Image

who soon left same again to try its luck in hunting.

Image

In the background you can clearly see all the sand islands which are normally covered by water. White faced ducks also landed close by,

Image

the pied kingfishers were again hanging around and allowed some shots when resting on a branch,

Image

and so did the green backed heron

Image

until we again focused onto the pied kingfisher.

Image

Another bird that we also normally do have luck in spotting quite regularly at that hide also appeared – a brown hooded kingfisher.

Image

to be continued…..
