Wow, Steamtrainfan, very interesting!
Those days this accident must surely have made huge waves throughout the country!

Even though its gruesome, it makes for fascinating reading! And to think all the responsible persons made one error or another, never knowing what was waiting ahead!
Thanks STF! This was something unexpectedly different. I actually checked in the Kruger map book after the first of your pages, to see exactly where on the Bume road this could have happened, but your page two laid it out well.

Interesting, Steamtrainfan!
Reminds me of a story from Gus Adendorf's book...which I no longer have where a train ploughed through a group of elephant in a cutting near Numbi Gate, after the railway had been rerouted around the Park! Also a gruesome business, to say the least!
Maybe you have the book?

Re: Train Crash in Kruger January 1968
My dad used to be a train driver is the Rhodesian Railways and their biggest job was to look out for ellies on the line.
They are so stubborn, because they feel they are bigger than anything and everything will stop or flee from them.
You can blow the whistle, screech the brakes but Mr Ellie stands his ground.
My dad did hit an Ellie - think it was twice. It causes some of the coaches to 'loose track'. I remember him having nightmares. In one situation - a night time hit - they had to get the game ranger to shoot the ellie 'cos it was hurt so much.
