As you all know I am quite an avid birder and really do enjoy the challenge of photographing them.
My bird count in February was quite low compared to previous summer trips but I did however have some lovely sightings. Here are a few bird photos that I took during the first six days of our trip. We were camping at Twee Rivieren and we had managed to get a spot up on the "hill" which used to be the non-powered campsites.
The park was crawling with Lanner Falcons..especially juveniles . We saw this inquisitive one on the first game drive of our trip...

The butterflies often got in the way...

This young Lanner in particular was full of his own importance and was not at all perturbed by our presence.

Kij Kij dam was not as full as we have seen it on the past but it did attract some seldom seen birds namely

Red-billed Teal and

Black-headed Heron

We had an interesting sighting of a Common Moorhen....not even near a waterhole. He seemed to be wandering around aimlessly until he noticed us and came right up to the car to investigate.

We came across a European Roller close to Houmoed - the only one that we saw on this trip.

Not long after that a Pygmy Falcon put in an appearance as well as two Red-necked falcons. As you can see by the images it was a very dull morning weather wise.

We had got off to a good start on that day birding wise but that was exactly where it ended...not much else seen after that.

You have never seen a Lanner ???? Seriously ??? You haven't lived ....says me who has never seen a Woodland Kingfisher....
So if you go to the KTP ...you are almost guaranteed a sighting a Lanner Falcon. I have just finished planning a trip to Kruger for 23 nights in Sept/Oct...am I going to see a Woodlands ....probably not :( :(
