On our last full day staying at Skukuza before we were due to head over to Lower Sabie we were keen to try and explore up the H1-2 and potentially get up to Tshokwane. The morning started with a nice sunrise, but it was cold and the animals seemed to be hiding away.

We checked a number of waterholes around Manzimahle but everything was deserted. In retrospect we were probably too early in the morning what with the cold temperature and I’m sure we would have seen a lot had we travelled the same route a few hours later in the day, but the kids were itching to rather head back and down towards Nkuhlu.
Wildlife started appearing along the H12 with a giraffe using its height to reach some breakfast, some nyala, duiker, and a small raptor that I think is a gabar goshawk

The kids felt very justified in their choice of route change when shortly after turning off the H12 bridge we found a couple of male lion just coming off the road.

They found something equivalent of lion catnip off the side of the road and were happily rolling their heads in it, but it made them difficult to see until they continued their walk away from us and off into the bush.
