What to do with when you format your SD card by mistake!

Post by BluTuna »

DON'T PANIC!

I thought I'd start this topic after reading a post on the yellow forum where someone inadvertantly put the wrong card in their camera and formatted it 0*\ .

As soon as you realise your mistake, take the card out of the camera - your images may still be on the card as formatting just clears the index file that records where the images are on the card. If you have taken some pictures, you might have lost some of the previous images as they will have been overwritten by new ones.

Formatting a large SD card would take several minutes at least if it cleared the whole card.

Google "recovering formatted SD card" or something similar and you'll find several pieces of software that will recover images that are on the card.

This may also work with cards that have been corrupted.

Fortunately, I can't recommend any of these applications as I haven't made this horrible mistake - YET!

Sandisk cards come with their own recovery program free inside the pack.

Used it once. Recovered all the files.

Do not work if you take a new set of photos on the card though. \O

Just to clear that one up Flutts.

If you deleted a card by mistake with 100 pics on it. Then took 10 new pics before realising your mistake and running the recovery program, you will likely get 90 of the original pics back. All depends on how full/empty the card was and where the new pics are written onto the disc. \O

I just hope this never happens to me. I NEVER remove my card from the camera, I always download from the camera. -O-

Hey FB who you calling idiotic 0= , just kidding =O: =O: =O:
Very good topic, there are quite a number of programs out there that recover data but as it has been mentioned, it can only be recovered if not over written.
have had to recover stuff on drives and SD cards more than once for people.
