Now is the right time to spot a dwarf bittern. They are tropical migrants that visit the KNP after summer rainfall when seasonal pans and low-lying areas flood. The birds arrive within days of flooding, typically in early January, and quickly pair off; males utter a dog-like bark from flooded trees and bushes to attract a female. Breeding is completed within two months and by late April most birds have disappeared.
