2nd Talamati to Skukuza

We were up early this morning and the car was packed quickly so we were on the road before 6am.

The roads out of Talamati were very quiet but as we hit the S36 Bushpig shouted “Jackals”

These 2 jackals were the side striped models and the 1 ran off immediately but the other parked for pics.

There was a hyena cruising around at Ximangwaneni Dam, so we followed along but it suddenly froze and we quickly spotted why, lions were approaching.

The hyena ducked for cover and the lions continued on, then they lay down and then 5 minutes later they got up and walked over to us and lay right next to the road.

There was only 1 other car at the sighting, also from Talamati, so it was magic which I suppose is the advantage staying in bush camps.

About 20 minutes went by with the lions laying around next to us, but suddenly the mood changed as some wildebeest and impala had come down to the corner of the dam for a drink and the lions had spotted them.

The lions moved surprisingly quickly and suddenly the stalk was on so my driving skills were getting tested as I had to reverse and photograph at the same time and it certainly wasn’t a peaceful affair in our car as the adrenalin was pumping.

Suddenly Bushpig and Albert started chirping

“Here comes another, here comes another on the other side!”

Lions were now stalking both sides of our car and this new addition to the stalk was using my car as cover.

To be continued
