Thanks for your comments Alf, Puff Addy, Lisbeth, Mel & Richprins. \O

Alf - Some were more clumsy than this one, but all were great to watch. \O

Puff Addy - Agree, stunning looking birds. \O

Lis - Not apparent in these pics are the "bouncing" they do after first touchdown to approach the melee. lol

Mel - Each bird had it's own individual way of landing & approaching the scrum. I guessed it hasd something to do with social ranking? -O-

RP - Lot's, and I really mean lots, of vulture pics to follow. It was great to see such large numbers present considering the plight of vultures elsewhere in Africa. \O

A slightly younger bird was next in line. It's final approach was more direct.

But still with the stiff-legged posture to absorb the shock of landing.

Image

There must have been a slight gap towards the rear of the carcass as it piled straight in without any fuss.

Image

The scramble for juicy morsels was now in full swing, with birds squabbling and fighting to get into the best position.

Image

The ones encircling the feast were either battling to get into the carcass or had already filled their crops with meat.

Image

Before making their way to a clear area so that they could digest their meal in peace.

Image

Even the smaller hooded vulture was in on the action.

Image

While above, more birds were arriving onto the scene, including lappet-faced.

Thanks RP, PJL & Lis. \O

RP - There are the odd records of cape vulture even further North in Chobe & Zimbabwe, but these are rare wanderers. Their distribution in Botswana is more to the South, with breeding colonies close to the border with SA. \O

With all the pale birds seen here, I checked each one hoping for a cape, but none came in.
