On Wednesday 8th May 2016, Minister Edna Molewa held a press briefing outlining the progress in the fight against rhino poaching but there are major discrepancies in the figures she quoted as follows:
INCORRECT STATEMENT NO. 1:
In her statement this year Edna Molewa quoted the number of rhino poached in the Kruger National Park between January and April had decreased from 302 in 2015 to 232 in 2016.
In her press briefing on 10th May 2015 Edna Molewa quoted the number of rhino slaughtered in the Kruger National Park between January and April as 290 mortalities. A discrepancy of 12 rhino.
INCORRECT STATEMENT NO. 2:
In her statement this year Edna Molewa quoted the number of rhino poached countrywide between January and April had decreased from 404 in 2015 to 363 in 2016.
In her press briefing on 10th May 2015 Edna Molewa quoted the number of rhino slaughtered countrywide between January and April as 393 mortalities. A discrepancy of 11 rhino.
INCORRECT STATEMENT NO. 3:
An article in the Lowvelder on 25th April 2016 claimed the number of poaching incidents in the Kruger National Park had dropped 6% in 2016 compared to the same period in 2015 (January to April).
A 6% reduction in poaching mortalities between January and April 2016 would be equal to 276 rhino NOT 232 rhino as was claimed by Edna Molewa in her press statement on Wednesday 8th May. A discrepancy of 44 rhino.
