I have been advised that there are leopard in Addo but regrettably we did not see one.

Wow! I've missed loads here, but great to catch up.

Wonderful scenery throughout and some great wildlife to add to the scenes. ^Q^

29 APRIL 2015 - DAY 14 - ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK - PART 1/2

We left Addo Camp with heavy hearts. Here a few photos of sightings on our way down to South Gate.

A rat catching the early morning sun.

Image

A Cape Robin-Chat.

Image

Ostrich pair and a lonely warthog.

Image

A scenic road through green valleys.

PJL had marked our map at interchange 38 that there was a possibility of seeing lion there. As we arrived at 38 we saw a couple of cars parked on the loop road a few metres from the main road. On enquiring one gent told us that they had seen a male lion kill a warthog 15 minutes ago and then tale it under a bush and out of sight. They were going to wait and see if anything developed. We waited about 15 minutes but PJL had SMS'd us to say that a lioness with cubs had been further along the loop. PJL also sent us a photo taken earlier in the morning of the cubs on an anthill with trees behind them. PJL sent us more detailed information and we found the anthill and trees. Unfortunately there was nothing to be seen. We decided to double back and see what was happening at 38. On arriving we saw another stopped there and they told us that they had seen another male lion - not the one that killed the warthog - cross the road from north to south right in front of their car but he had also since disappeared. O/ O/ O/ O/ We waited and watched for a few minutes when Joan saw a black backed jackal running, quite far into the bush, towards the main road. We moved on and turned onto the main road and waited to see if would cross the road. Sure enough he did with a warthogs head in his mouth.

We were not able to ID this raptor. Please help.

A lazy herd of buffalo on the Vukani Loop.

Image

A visit to Addo would not be complete without a photo of the famous dung beetle.

Image

A Grey Heron on the Mbotyi Loop.

Image

Joan captured this Southern Double-Collared Sunbird at South gate. I never ever realised that they had a yellow spot on their shoulder which can clearly be seen in these two photos.

29 APRIL 2015 - DAY 14 - ADDO TO WILLOWS RESORT - PART 2/2

OK, we are out of Addo and our attention goes back to bridges and other things.

The first is this closed bridge across the Sundays River near Colchester on the old main road R102 to Grahamstown.

Image

Same bridge from another angle.

Image

Near to PE is this still being used bridge on the R102 which crosses the Swartkops River.

Image

Road bridge on the left and railway bridge on the right.

Image

Another view of the road bridge.

Image

As I was getting into the car I heard the hoot of a train and managed to catch this ore train crossing the bridge.

Image

I turned around to watch it go past and this is what I saw - unfortunately directly into the sun.

Image

On arrival at Willows Resort this was the view from our chalet.

END OF DAY 14.
