Thanks Roger, I use a Tamron 90mm Macro lens - the old one without VR. Optically it's excellent but it is slow to focus and sometimes hunts for focus. This may be a compatibility problem with the D5100 as I had similar issues with my Tamron 150-600 which have gone away with the D7200.
