Andrew Desmet, a section ranger from the Kruger National Park’s Letaba Camp has regained consciousness and is ready for a follow-up procedure after he was seriously injured by friendly fire.

Andrew Desmet, a section ranger from the Kruger National Park’s Letaba Camp has regained consciousness after he was seriously injured by friendly fire during an anti-rhino poaching operation in the Kruger National Park in May.
He had to undergo an emergency procedure at Nelspruit Mediclinic but follow-up procedures have been postponed until Thursday.
The doctors allegedly feared infection. Andrew was under sedation and on a ventilator in the ICU ward at Nelspruit Mediclinic for the last three weeks.
'Good morning, dad is looking much better and is starting to breathe on his own. They may take the ventilator out very soon so he can start talking,' Rebecca Desmet, Andrew's daughter posted on the Andrew Desmet Support Group page on facebook on June 15.
Thursday (20 June) Andrew is stable enough to undergo a follow-up operation at Nelspruit Mediclinic.
On Father's Day Rebecca posted the following: 'Dad is looking much the same like the past few days. We ask him questions and he gives us gestures as an answer, funny faces. Although he drifts in and out of consciousness often and I can't wait for the day we can talk again, but he needs a lot of rest and sleep. Happy Farther's Day, Dad.'
Investigations into the circumstances of the incident are on-going, although initial findings have confirmed that he was injured by SANDF fire during the operation and reports claim that he was shot in the stomach by a defence force lieutenant.
A case of attempted murder is still being investigated by the police according to news reports.
SANParks head of anti-poaching operations, Major General (Ret) Johan Jooste, confirmed that the incident happened during a joint operation, but advised against drawing any conclusions as the circumstances are still being investigated by the police.

More good news:
Andrew celebrates his mom's birthday with Linda, Rebecca, Cailin, Rachel and his dad.
He was allowed to be brought into the courtyard so we could all sing happy birthday to mom and grandma.

I'm confused by a statement posted on a previous page.

He was shot by an SANDF member that was on patrol with him. The guy that shot him was a personal friend of his.
