The ABC of Kruger

We'll start at A and once that list is finished we'll move on to B and so on. Only one answer per post and please do not flood the topic with your own answers....allow other members a chance to answer too.

Albasini Ruins

Joao Albasini was born 1 May 1813, in Lisbon, Portugal. He came to Lourenço Marques in 1831 and became a slave trader and Elephant hunter. The remains of his trading post can be found near Phabeni Gate,

Afsaal Picnic site

The Kruger National Park’s Afsaal picnic spot, located at the junction of the H3 and H2-2, is situated quite centrally and is on the banks of the mostly dry Mthlowa River.

Afsaal is an Afrikaans word that means "a place to break the journey".

Alf Roberts' Trading Store site (on the S25)

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, a Hungarian entrepreneur, Alois Nellmaplus, was contracted to build a better route to Delagoa Bay. Trading stores sprang up along this route, one of which was Alf Roberts’ Trading Store, near the ford. The route was used between 1874 and 1892 but fell into disuse after the railway line to Delagoa Bay was opened. The kindly host later met his death by some unknown assailant in his store at Malelane.

All that remains of the Alf Roberts Trading Store today is marked by a couple of mounds and a few broken bottles.

Ampie se Boorgat(S118/H3)

This borehole (boorgat) which was sunk in 1973 was named after Ampie Esbach, a game ranger who was stationed at Malelane from 1954 to 1964.

Anna Ledeboer's grave (3rd turnoff on the S62)

In 1919, Leonard Henry Ledeboer became one of the early rangers of the future Kruger National Park, and later relieved "Ou Kat" Coetser at Satara. He retired to Letsitele, where he ran a small store.
His second wife, Anna Maria Christina Ledeboer (née Bindemann) is buried just west of the confluence between the Letaba River and the Makhadzi Spruit. Mrs Ledeboer apparently died unexpectedly of a heart attack or of malaria. The grave is at the end of the 3rd turn off on the S62.

Amatshukeni (A silted up waterhole in the N'waswitsontso River.)

The Tsonga word “amatshukeni” (at the ant hills) was given to the waterhole by ranger J. Kloppers in 1958 and refers to the large termitaries in the vicinity.

There was apparantly a sable release facility here at some stage.
