Let me try and explain what I did with the Vulture pic.
I used three separate images.
Image 1 was the Vulture on the tree, taken on a very overcast day. The background was a washed out white.
Image 2 was the moon, obviously taken at night and totally black around the moon.
Image 3 was taken at an air show. I only used the blue sky section for this pic.
I then played with the Vulture image and cut away all the background, quite easy as it was all white. I had to clean up the edges of the tree a bit, and if you look closely you will see it wasn't done all that well.
Next was to do the same with the moon, all the black around the moon was removed.
I then pasted the moon on the blue sky and then pasted the Vulture over the first two layers. Then it was just a case of moving everything until it looked ok. The last step was to flatten and save.

I can understand that those of you, who have photography as a hobby like to play around with all kind of methods to make interesting, artistic etc. photos, but it should not be allowed to make them pass as nature photos as they do on National Geographic, according to Leachy. The readers who have never been "out there" will believe that, that's what it looks like

lisbeth.... you are correct.
images that have been manipulated may not be classified as "nature" photography
but as pictorial photography..
i am quite certain that sprocky (or any other reputable photographer) will never enter that image in any "nature" category of any competition or publication.

Re: Manipulated Images including HDR's
For a photo to be classed as a nature/wildlife shot it is not allowed to be manipulated. All that cone be done is setting the density, saturation, contrast and sharpening. All of this would have been possible in a dark room with wet film as well. Once it is manipulated it becomes a special effect shot.
