Care for Wild has another baby...only 8 weeks old!! :-(

This was posted on CFW's FB page last week:
HAPPY Rhino Friday everyone---- Or at least we think so. Thank you to Liam Burrough for this touching message and for stopping so this little one can rest in the shade of your car and drink your water. If only the world had more people like you. This is Liam’s story:

“This evening I have something to get off my chest so if you're not in the mood for rants then skip this, but I really hope you don't.

Driving just South of Tshokwane in the Kruger today we stumbled across an 8-week old white rhino calf standing all alone in the road. Badly dehydrated, covered in wounds and clearly in desperate search of shade, the calf approached my car. She called out into emptiness, looked on for a moment and then rested her chin on my door. Slumping onto her hindquarters and then onto her belly she caught a few moments of peaceful rest in our shadow. She had undoubtedly lost her mother at this tender age to a poacher, one of the hardest hit areas by poaching in the Kruger. We sent another car to get help from a rangers station whilst we sat, giving the calf cooling showers with bottled water and more than anything, comfort and reassurance... remaining there until rangers arrived and a helicopter was on the way. The tragic irony in all of this being that the calf had approached the very creatures that are responsible for her being orphaned in search of comfort.

With this said, it is our responsibility as humans to protect these animals. The bastards fueling this ridiculous trade have to be stopped. As a continent we need to let these lower forms of human life know that we will not stand for the senseless slaughter of our wildlife. I do hope you will like and share this status but merely spreading awareness is not enough. Change begins with you, so get off of your ass and do something! Write angry letters, donate as much money as you can to fund guns, dogs, equipment and salaries for the hands we so badly need to stop these gentle giants from disappearing. I won't be participating in the ice bucket challenge but I will be donating a percentage of my salary every month to a rhino charity in the area of Hoedspruit starting now. Extinction is forever and it's coming for Africa's rhinos, together we can stop it.”
We need your help, if you would like to donate anything please feel free to contact us for a list of suggestions on where you can help support the cause and defeat the destruction of our wildlife. training.protrack@gmail.com ... You as a young man can also contribute. Come to us for training so we can point you in the right direction and to equip you with the tools and knowledge that you need to help with this is done with us. Have a thoughtful Friday!!!

What a sad indictment indeed. As mentioned by Liam the irony of this poor Rhino calf having to rely on the very species that shot its mother for support to keep it alive.

I have just this very minute heard about yet another Rhino killed at the Glen Afric farm in the North West.

Thanks, Flutts!

Most ironic indeed...humans gathering around to protect what the "sub-humans" left behind!

A nice summary courtesy of Stark:

* SANParks attempted to use a gag order last week to keep details quiet about these bonuses, and inadvertently named the employee.
* Between June 2013 and April of this year, the employee was given R1.4 million in bonuses. With perks over the same time, he made R2.8 million.
* The fundariser makes a monthly salary that is 10x what a senior ranger makes.
* The largest bonus of R1 million was paid in March, shortly after the Buffet Foundation donation of R255 million.
* The income package for this individual rivals what Dr Mabunda used to make as the CEO.
* When asked if donation money was used to pay these bonuses, Rey Thakhuli said that employee remuneration was confidential.
* SANParks is reviewing the whole mess.
* The employee and his wife went on an official SANParks trip to the USA 3 weeks after the Buffet Foundation donation was received. He and his wife went to such conservation and wildlife areas of the US (sarcasm is my own) of Hawaii, Washington DC, New York, and California, according to the Facebook page updates of the employee and his wife.

Maybe the guy deserves the bonuses due to his work, but can't he at least pay for his own holiday? Why should it be an official SP trip? 0-

It's like a "triple" bonus then? 0:

Rhino sent to a game lodge for protection, killed

2014-09-08 17:11
Wallace du Plessis

Cape Town - Conservationists, police and volunteers are tracking two poachers over the Magaliesberg after a rhino cow was poached.

Isabella, or Charlize, depending on who you speak to, was rescued a few weeks ago from the liquidated Aloe Ridge Hotel and Nature Reserve at Broederstroom after her mate disappeared.

At 02:10 on Monday morning two shots were heard. Three minutes later staff of Glen Afric Lodge were on the scene of the poaching. The horn had already been removed and the two poachers were escaping through thick bush. Unfortunately the rhino was dead.

Police who were patrolling in the area arrived soon afterwards and the chase began. The tracking team has followed the pair of poachers high into the Magaliesberg and are hot on their heels.

Police, volunteers, in fact many of the Broederstroom community have been helping to catch the poachers. Staff at Glen Afric say the support has been amazing.

Police have confirmed the incident and the ongoing tracking operation.

Staff are optimistic that the two poachers will be caught.

If I remember correctly she was named "Shadow" following a well needed rest in the shadow of a car after her ordeal :-( How original
