3, 4 and 5 June: The mice come out to play

One thing we have learned over the years whilst visiting the Kgalagadi, is that predator sightings come and go in cycles.
So far this trip, we had been overly spoilt with cat sightings of various kinds.
This was about to change

Not knowing what was about to happen, I look out over the Polentswa Pan at sunrise

Image

The sunrise is, as always stunning

Image

We decide to head south ( Certainly not doing the roads to the north again)
All is quiet
There are a pleasant congregation of animals at Langklaas

Image

And a warthog at Bedinkt

Image

Image

The warthog and a few gemsbok decide to have a bit of an argy bargy as to who has rights over the waterhole

Image

The gemsboks are such sacredly cats, and are soon pushed off. 0-

(Mind you those warthog tusks are pretty impressive!)

Image

The next morning we awoke to a lot of leopard paw prints around our campsite. And by a lot, I mean a lot. Our neighbours in number 3 had the same.
But no leopards. :-(

We were headed off to Nossob for the next two nights
On the way down we saw these guys blocking the road

Image

A Pygmy falcon posing in a bush

Image

And this Whyda at Cubitjie Quap

Image

We arrived at Nossob and were allocated Premium Campsite no 9

Image

It was not bad, quite near the fence, but in summer we would have battled as there was little shade to be had.

Tired after moving camps, we stayed in that evening and relaxed around a lekker braai.

The next day, our only full day in Nossob was really quiet.

We decided to go south and went as far as Dikbaardsolk
This mongoose was out and about

Image

But that was all.
A Pearl spotted owl back in camp helped improve the day

Image

Image

As did these red headed finches drinking from a coke bottle at our camp site

Image

Image

Our evening drive was, well, as always around Maries ,

Typical to form, Maries delivered with a far off African Wild Cat.

Image

Our cat drought broken, we set off back to camp, not before taking in this typical Marie’s scene

Your cat day wasn't broken  You saw a wild cat lol

Ja, I heard people complaining about the lack of shade at the premium camp sites.
Quite a nuisance when you consider how much such a site costs O**

6 June: We move on to KTC

Our original itinerary was for us to move from the premium campsite to a normal campsite for one night before heading off to Mata Mata for 4 nights.
The idea of moving camp for one night did not appeal, and I suddenly had a light bulb idea. O**

What about a night of luxury at KTC and then, we will be close by the next day to claim a better campsite at Mata Mata. Let me check if there is anything available? -O-

There was. O\/

So first thing that morning , our trailer was all packed up and we set off to explore the Aoub River.

Image

The way down the Nossob, was true to recent form, very quiet.
We did see this PCG in a tree

Image

And the glossy starlings joined us for coffee at Dikbaardskolk

Image

Image

We carried on over the Upper Dune road, had a quick pit stop at Kamqua and set off north to Mata Mata

Just before Craig Lockhart, we saw a few cars on the side of the road
The reason: a far off leopard in a tree.

We couldn’t believe it. This was our third leopard of the trip. We usually are lucky to see even one. O/\ O/\

Image

The cat was quite far away and asleep, so we decided to carry on and return later.
(It was only about 18kms from KTC, so quite doable)

Just before Sitsas, a crowd of black backed jackals were making the most of an old gemsbok kill. Not sure who provided the meal, but they weren’t complaining.

Image

Things were looking up :-)

After booking into camp, and having a short break from the road, the lure of a leopard in a tree was far more powerful than the idea of just chilling in camp, so off we went...
This pale tawny eagle was posing in a tree as we made our way down south

Image

Back to Craig Lockhart to find that the cars and the leopard were still there
OK so I worked out how long we had to stay with her, and we waited

Image

Image

She eventually got up and moved off in the wrong direction, over the far dune.
Back at camp that evening, the sunset was amazing

Image

And my special lady and I enjoyed a wonderful evening on the patio of the tent

Lovely photo of Debbie against the sunset \O

Three leopards is definitely a great score ^Q^ Is it Itumeleng? Or her offspring? :-?

Those glossy starlings can look quite funnily inquisitive :-0

At least you saw a leopard, even if far away ;-)

7 June 2018: Lions at Kalahari Tented Camp

We were woken in the early hours of the morning to the sound of lions roaring.
Our best sound ever ^Q^

At first the roars were quite feint, but as time progressed, they got louder and louder.
Our alarm went off at 6am, and just as we were putting the kettle on for some coffee, there was this almighty roar, that seemed as if it came from within the bathroom.

We grabbed our torches and ran outside to the fenced in area behind the chalets where the bakkie was parked.
We were just in time to see the two brothers striding past our cabin in the access road, roaring.
Wow. What an awesome sound. They could not have been more than 30metres from us. O\/

I ran inside to get Debbie’s camera, but the light was really bad and they were on the move so we didn’t get any usable pics.

We left camp and found them parked off on top of a dune overlooking their kingdom in the Auob
