Birds of the Kruger National Park - Sasol

Post by Dzombo »

There is a new bird book out on the KNP

Birds of the Kruger National Park
by Warwick Tarboton & Peter Ryan

Each entry has a photo of the bird, a short description and a distribution map

It's well put together, but my only complaint is the distribution maps.
The distribution is noted by dots on a map, and also covers areas surround the game reserve. The boundry line is not very distinct and at times it's not clear where the distribution actually is.

But I would say well worth getting

For my use it is too limited; I never go only to Kruger when I am in South Africa.

The pro is, that it is probably smaller than the "normal" Sasol, if you only need it for Kruger birds \O

Interesting for people who regularly go to Kruger. \O But with an electronic version you would also be able to narrow the distribution down to a certain region (at least you can do so with the Roberts) and you don't have to take an extra book (says the person who has to plan smart for flying, particularly because she hates taking more than 15 kg in addition to the 15 on the back with the camera equipment...) and you don't have to buy an extra guide (being cheap here :o0ps: ). But... using an electronic bird guide is a matter of taste anyway. Some like handling it, some don't. \O

What I don't really understand is your critics of the maps and the dots. Could you show us an example to illustrate it? Thanks! X#X

Sasol is also my book of choice..the old one with illustrations! Photos are not good for ID'ing birds, in my experience...or one could put it another way, the Newman, Hayman, Arlott paintings are brilliant! ^Q^

The technological one is terribly expensive......or at least it was, some time back, so I never got it -O- And I do not need it that often ;-)
