Sooooo, after reading of such amazing sightings around Hippo Loop and other places on Pilanesberg Sightings WhatsApp our stress levels at being at home got to an all time high. So I set about looking up accommodation availability at Pilanesberg and found a bargain booking of a safari tent at Manyane for R450.00 per night. Almost half price. Yeeeeehaaaaa, two nights 21 and 22 July 2015 booked. Photos to follow.

Day 1 - Tuesday afternoon. Part 1.

Elephant drinking at Lengau Dam.

Stopped at Kubu picnic site where Joan got this photo of a Grey Hornbill.

Image

Carrying along Kubu Drive we were driving up the rise towards Mankwe Way when we spotted some elephant coming out of the bush and onto the tar road. We stopped to allow them to be in front of us. We followed them and on cresting the rise we saw a small car stopped further down the road as there were was a herd of elephant in front of it. This was going to prove interesting as the elephant in front of us carried on walking towards the car. On getting closer to the car the elephant seemed unsure of what to do especially the huge matriarch.

Image

At one stage she even seemed to get annoyed with us but we were far from her.

Eventually they seemed to make up their minds and walked on and closed in on the small car.

Image

They then stopped next to the car while the small elephant investigated what this intruder was. It was then we saw three people in this car one of whom was a child.

Image

Satisfied that this intruder meant no harm they walked on past the car and then off into the bush leaving the road clear.

Image

We moved on forward and pulled up next to this small car as they had not moved. The driver was an American lady, her daughter and young son. They were all laughing nervously and looked a whiter shade of pale.

I complimented her on remaining so calm. She said that was what she had read in the booklet.

She said that she could even hear the rumbling noises elephant make but she did manage to get some good close up photos.

On Hippo Loop we saw a brown hyena walking through a clearing in the bush.

What a wonderful way to manage stress! lol

Love the ellie encounter! Glad that the species in P-berg seems rather calm as well, comparing them to the Addo ones.
That popped into my mind straight away because we witnessed something similar there, just with a bull who was with
a herd of females and their youngsters. That bull actually stuck his nose into a car. Slime could be seen on the dashboard
afterwards. lol And some eyes almost popping during the event. lol

Brownie! That must be a very good find! O:V
