The Great Escape

Friday July 16th contd

The reason for a few cars parking off at Biyamiti Weir was a bunch of hyenas on a buffalo kill



With no sign of lions around we assumed that the hyenas must have taken the buffalo down themselves. We moved down onto the weir which made for some amazing views of the hyenas and their reflections





Something startled the hyenas and they went running in all directions for a brief moment



Then the feasting continued... the crunching sounds were amazing to hear!







We drove up to the bank on the other side where people were parked, but couldn’t really see why they were stopped there as you couldn’t see down to the kill as far as we could tell. Driving back down to the weir the resident fish eagles were in view



Back on the weir the reflections were even better





One of the hyenas didn’t seem to be welcome at the kill. It kept trying to move in for some food but was chased away by others

Friday July 16th contd

Moving on from the hyenas, we travelled north for a bit on the S114 and came across a few ground hornbill





A short while later we found another hyena with what appeared to be a hoof from the buffalo kill





The kids really wanted to go check out the S26 in case the young male leopard was around but there was no sign of him, so we ended up continuing along the S26 & H5 then up to Lower Sabie for a stop, before the H4-1 back to Skuks. The regulars were around at Sunset dam





The rest of the drive was quiet, and after a long morning in the car we did just a short afternoon drive down a bit of the S1 and back. It continued to be a hyena day









A kudu and bushbuck rounded off the day nicely





The day had also been fruitful for these guys

As I said before, apparently nyala are driving the bushbuck out!

Going down the S1 must have been a very far trip from there, Peej?
