Re: Essential Camping Equipment
Some cool camping ideas!
Use foam floor tiles for a softer, more comfortable tent floor.

Point a head lamp into a jug of water for an instant lantern.

Make tin-can sandwich bread as a portable food option.

Repurpose a coffee can to hold and protect toilet paper.

Use Tic-Tac boxes to store spices.

Make travel coffee bags out of coffee filters and dental floss.

Make a portable washing machine with a plunger and a bucket.
Make an easy-to-carry fire starter with a cardboard-only egg carton and match light charcoal.

Add bundles of sage to a campfire to keep mosquitoes away.

The floor tiles are a nice idea but we have an 3mx2.5m rug we put on the tent floor, much nicer than the feel of a groundsheet and especially nice for those sub-zero KTP mornings.

More tips for the die-hard campers...

Seems that campers are those people with looooads of time on their hands.

Cut a hole in the bottom of a black bag to get your head through, it makes for a good emergency poncho.
Don't walk across another camper's site - walk around it.
Block ice works well for the food cooler - it will last longer. Crushed/cubed ice is good for the drink cooler.
Place newspapers under your sleeping bag to provide extra insulation.

This wont work at Satara at the fence where guys were using drill to start the holes and Bobbejaan Spanners to get them out ...My wife and I are in the next few months going to get the Afrospoor Eezy Camper off Road camper trailer ...No Pegs ...so we will be set up in 10 mins at Satara for example instead of taking a dayBluTuna wrote:The ideal thing for banging in tent pegs is a nylon panelbeater's hammer. They are made of heavy duty nylon with a lead weight in the head and they last forever - I've had mine for about 20 years.
Thor's tentpeg hammer! About 30cm long and weighing in at just over 1Kg.

I take a Nightcore security Torch MH 25 (Fits in the palm of your hand and can on max shine 300 metres...well made for US Army ...I also have a smaller Nitecore Torch for inside the tent and vehicle and a top head torch...I used to have heavy 5 battery Maglites but they are useless in darkest Africa but make good Knobkerries ...The tiny Nitecores are the best by far ...fit in a jacket pocketserval wrote:How many torches do you take along on a (proper destination without electric plugs) camping trip, and how many do you own in total ?
