That river has been red since time began, Pumbaa, when it comes down. What a sight!

Finally I got to see a barn owl and we were so happy which made the very last hours in the park a bit brighter

The drive along the S63 was as always simply amazing with baobabs

and one of the most beautiful parts when it comes to vegetation in the entire park – The wet summer made this even more clear with the high grass everywhere.



Birdingwise that drive is normally also not that bad and soon we came across a woodland kingfisher



and our very first giant kingfisher during that trip and we already thought we had to leave the park without even seeing one.

For sure we were over the moon and gladly same stayed long enough for a couple of shots.

Finally we reached Crooks corner and the water nearly reached the parking area where you are allowed to leave the car.



It was incredible to see the river that full as I remember having been there when you only looked at sand.



Meanwhile it got steadily darker and dark clouds built up but the long we stayed in the park it stayed dry. We drove back via Klopperfontein and here a lot of Egyptian goose could be seen.



We paid a short visit to Punda Maria camp but had to skip our usual final drive on the Mahonie loop as it was already too late so whilst the gate came closer and closer the impala said good bye – until next year!

That Pafuri area must have the greatest difference in grass cover in the Park between wet and dry seasons1
