Identification
Sexes similar, male larger and with slightly longer crest and tail. Orange facial skin, grey-­black plumage and characteristic striding gait through grass. In flight, barred tail distinctive.
Juvenile: Plumage browner, facial skin yellow and with shorter tail.

Identification
36 cm; sexes alike, male considerably larger than femal. Blackish (not red) upper mandible and legs.
Juvenile: Duller overall, with less bare red skin on face; throat with white feathers and bill brown with yellow base.
