Description
Perennial dwarf shrub. Height: 0.1–0.5 m. Stems much-branched, woody, glabrous, whitish.
Leaves in whorls of 4, 1 often much longer than the other 3, linear-lanceolate to elliptic, simple, leathery, grey-green, hairy with rough texture on both sides, margins with spine-tipped teeth.
Flowers solitary, lobes 2 or 4, blue or mauve, tubes creamy white, brown-veined, surrounded by large spiny bracts. Flowering time all year.
Fruit a capsule ± 12 × 6 mm.
Distribution
Botswana (SE), Zimbabwe, Lesotho, South Africa (Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West)
Habitat
Found in nearly every grassland and savanna habitat, often on degraded or disturbed soils.
