The board of the trust consists of the Zulu king (the chairman), currently Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, and eight members appointed by the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform in the national government, after consultation with the King, the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal and the chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal House of Traditional Leaders. As of 2012, the Trust owns 32% of the land in KwaZulu-Natal, about three million hectares, occupied by over 4 million people.[3] It also manages the mineral rights to the land.
The trust does not pay taxes to the eThekwini municipality.
