Touch wood! :-(
I am sorry RP, but that is a pathetic attitude to take on! It's like saying,...sorry to hear that you were robbed, but luckily you got away with your life in tact. O/ O/

You go and tell Andrew that what he fought for was great, but luckily it was not the enemy that shot him. Say the same to Jakes' widow, explain to her that it was not the poachers that shot the chopper down!!! 0*\ 0*\

This is exactly why this country is in such a state, we accept too much crime as being the norm. Time for the fat cats to grow some balls and sort out their own countries crap instead of heading across the borders and oceans to try and help there!!!

I don't think my statement was pathetic...rather indicating that officers in the field currently have an advantage over poachers...of which poachers are well aware too! The problem is they mostly get caught or killed after the crime, unfortunately. I certainly don't accept this as being the norm, hence our continued efforts!

You CANNOT judge the success rate of anti-poaching by the number of poachers arrested or by the number of anti-poaching officers not killed by poachers!!! You judge it on the number of poaching incidents brought down to zero!!!

I'm assuming that the brains trust in SANParks have looked at the below if they put the fence back up
FFT Secure Fence™

With a Secure Fence™ system, you can detect and locate intrusions on perimeters and borders that were, until now, always thought to be too expensive to protect.
The low cost fibre optic sensor cable is easily attached to the fence, pinpointing the location of an intrusion to within 25 meters (75 feet) or better, regardless of the fence length.

FFT's Advanced Recognition and Discrimination ARaD advanced signal processing reduces nuisance alarms, while maintaining high sensitivity to intrusions.
Secure Fence™ works equally well on Chainmesh, Chainlink, Weldmesh and Palisade style fences.

Executive Summary
Monitor up to 80Km per controller. Multiple systems can be networked to monitor longer distances
Locate intrusions to 25 metres
Ideal for airports, government facilities, military bases and petrochemical plants
No electronics or power in the field
Immune to Lightning

The simple installation, reliability and maintenance free operation delivers the lowest Total Cost of Ownership of any long perimeter solution in the market.
Applications
• Military Bases
• Government Facilities
• Oil Refineries
• Petrochemical Plants
Country Borders
• Airports
• Any long distance fence

Key Benefits

• Know the exact location where an intrusion occurs and where to dispatch security staff to ensure a rapid response, or activate specific CCTV camera imagery.
• Significant up-front cost savings as only one system is required to support up to 80 kilometers (50 miles) of fibre optical sensing cable. Secure Fence delivers the lowest installation cost per meter.
• Lowest ongoing Total Cost of Ownership TCO as there is no electronics in the field, no power in the field and it is easy and economical to install or expand. There is no field maintenance, and the fibre optic cable is unaffected by RFI, EMI, lightning or storms. Only extremely durable and reliable fibre optical cable is out in the field.
• Security staff can have faith in the system as Secure Fence delivers a high Probability of Detection (POD) simultaneously with an extremely low Nuisance Alarm Rate due to the intelligent event discrimination and analysis utilized.

I have said this time and time again.

Even if you combine the killed poachers and the arrested poachers and you put them against the amount of rhinos poached this year, the outcome is more than pathetic.

It is by no means an indicator that the anti- poaching effort is gaining momentum.

Also other factors have to be taken knto consideration.
Like the amount of calves been killed at the moment and directly linked the amount of females that are killed.
Also the fact that more males are being born than females.

All in all it makes for a really dire situation and the conseques will only be visible in the coming years.

By no means we are winning the battle let alone the war.

We are loosing big time as it is now.

Thats assuming that there is a "brains trust" in SANParks. O**

On the other hand, is an international border now placed under the control of supposed conservation experts and not national security? -O-

FFT solution is cheaper than you think and it works, but I can put money on it that it hasn't even been looked at.

There are plenty other solutions out there also, but as a start the fence needs to go back up

I’m also assuming that all in the counter poaching initiative are “armed” with thermal imaging cameras with video analytics. The analytics can do all the identification for you and indentify people amongst hundreds of animals. Also relatively inexpensive if it’s looked at in perspective -O-
