Maybe something to do with their scent glands , calf trying to rub his scent onto mother ?

Ok, some very interesting stuff from Dr Joubert:
Antelope that keep their calves hidden from birth, like the waterbuck, do a stimulation routine once the calf comes out of hiding to get the poo and pee to work properly. This involves lengthy licking and what not, during which process the mother consumes the waste expelled!
Antelope that hide their young are those that do not produce mass calving seasons, like impala and wildebeest do, for example.
Kudu hide their young, as do sable (two weeks) and roan (six weeks!)
