They have a toxic barb halfway down the tail which I believe has a poison similar to that of certain snakes, but they aren’t electric. The barb delivers a painful "sting" and can kill if around the heart area

You are correct Flutts, all in SA call it a "honeycomb" ray, but it's also known as a leopard ray

The sandshark or giant guitar fish is a favourite catch for many on the KZN coast and their primary concentration is from November to March. They are exceptionally strong fish and can keep an angler busy for hours.
In all the years that I have fished for them I have only seen 1 “angler” keep a sandy for food, but haven’t seen him again as other anglers would throw him off the rocks if he showed his face again.
