Re: CAPE SPARROW - Bird of the month AUGUST*

Post by okie »

A couple of weeks ago , I found this weaver's nest under a tree , after it was blown down by the wind , so I brought it home , and hanged it up on the verandah . Like , as an ornament , you know :O^

So , imagine my surprise , when , two days ago , I saw a couple of sparrows going into and out of the nest . Now , as you all know , Cape sparrows have a big , untidy nest , which with lots of grass just bundled between branches of a tree , or where ever they find suitable , but obviously these two decided to go more " modern " or something 0*\
Or maybe they just thought it's easier to use someone else's second hand house .

Yeahh , I agree with all that ;-) Will of course keep a close watch on " developments " . The nest is hanging where I can see at all times from where I sit here in front of my computer -, about 4 meters away :-)
Only problem is , it is also about 4 meters away from my braai 0*\

Very clever sparrows!! lol \O

We've got one of the 'normal' untidy nests in our garden and on Friday it fell out of the tree with a little one inside! :-(

We put the nest back as best we could and the parents spent all day trying to fix it, only for it to fall out again on Friday evening. 0*\ We put it back again, and it's stayed put since then! \O

Have not yet had the pleasure of meeting the new residents , and as such have not yet been able to find out their first names :O^ . I just know them as Mr and C. Sparrow .
They are obviously very proud of their new home , and I see a lot of coming and going , in and out all the time , bringing new furniture -- " feathering their nest " so to speak .
Like any nosy neighbour , trying to find out more about them , I waited until they were out and sneaked a look ( feel ) , and I am pleased to report , the interior is already well padded with feathers , and -- wait for it --- YES , the " nursery " have a couple of eggs in it O/\ .
I think , incubation is about 2 weeks . Better not to disturb them again from now on ;-)
