There are some woods not far from me, where I go walking now and then.
Plenty of dead wood lying about. But it's usually a bit damp, half rotting and covered in moss and lichen. Don't really want to use that.

Mean time....
I seemed to recall that the braais as Berg n Dhal were brick. I last stayed there in December 2012.
So I went to have a look at the accommodation photos "on the other side".
And yes, they are brick. With a flat base for the charcoal. And raised sides. Just not sloped chimney section.
And I don't recall having problems getting the braai started there -O-

Your braai is bright new, Dzombo! You must let it have the time to get the "feeling" lol

Your braai is much more enclosed I think, Dzombs, being against a wall too? Try other charcoal first? 0()

Ja, brick braais are common! :ty:

I do have an almost unlimited supply of cardboard.
My SO is a "shareholder" in Amazon. We have a delivery almost daily.
And I gotto say they are not the most environmental conscious company. The boxes are about 3 times bigger than the item being delivered with a ton of wrapping to fill the gap 0-

Cardboard works \O

You can make good firelighters using old cardboard and newspaper , by soaking it in water , then tearing it up in small pieces , mush it up , to make a paper-mache slurry .
Squeeze out the water and make lumps etc from the paper -mache .
Then let it dry out .
Afterwards , soak it in a bit of paraffin , and store in jar or a can . It is really great to start a fire with \O

Hmmmm..... waiting to hear RP's comment about using paraffin ^0^

I think Dzombs wants to braai with the cardboard, not start the fire... O-/

Ja, paraffin is a phossil phuel, you know. I think you farmers should use cow dung, okie, so as not to waste! \O

Hmmmm..... look I have done a lot of " experimenting " in my lifetime .
And indeed , you can braai with cardboard .
In fact , you can use the method I have already described to make the paper-mache , then instead of making small little lumps/balls with your hands , you stuff it down a piece of piping , say 50 mm diameter . Then , use a ramrod or something ( you can make it from a piece of wood ) , and push the paper-mache through the pipe . It should come out like turds . Let it dry like already mentioned , and you can set it alight just like logs .
It burns very slowly , almost smoldering , but certainly , it will make coals which can braai your meat .......
