A small wasp on an euphorbia in Marloth last month...only noticed now what a weird abdomen it has!

Ropalidia sp, Paper Wasp. The enlarged second abdominal segment is the give-away (bell-shape appearance). The other segments can telescope into this.

good observation
The abdominal segments are retracted causing the characteristic shrunken appearance. Thus the abdomen is very short, but looks quite broad due to retraction of segments.

The adults feed on lily leaves and the larvae develop in the bulbs of
Amaryllis, Ammocharis, Clivia.
Obviously widespread in Southern Africa
