04 MAY 2015 - DAY 19 - RAPTOR RIDGE TO VENTERSBURG - ONS KUIERHUIS - PART 1/4

It was with heavy hearts that we left Raptor Ridge Lodge as this was to be our last "off the highways" day of travel. From Ventersburg we hit the N1 to Pretoria.

Early morning grass in the morning sun before we left Raptor Ridge Lodge.

On the R701 near Raptor Ridge Lodge.

Image

Another wind pump scene this time on the R701 with part of Gariep Dam in the background.

Image

The long straight roads of the Free State.

Image

We promise that this will be our last bridge photo.
A combined road-rail bridge, the Hennie Steyn Bridge, crosses the Gariep River at Bethulie. The bridge is 1'152Km long, and 51,5m high - the longest in South Africa, and claimed to be the longest in the southern hemisphere. I would love to have caught a train crossing the bridge.

Viewed from the Western side.....

......and then from the eastern side.

Part 2/4 to follow.

Not much traffic on the secondary roads O/\ O/\

That's a very long bridge, but 1'152Km is exaggerated methinks lol
