My backups are a mess after computer crashed, so chronologically according to pics we should have been miles North by now...anyway...






This was an absolutely orgasmic sighting! I am passionately lazy about sitting at waterholes, Eendrag in this case, and passionate about seeing rare antelope, especially in the North of the Park!











Sable have gone through tremendous numerical fluctuations in the North, so this was very nice indeed! Especially such a big herd!









I'll keep some pics in the natural blinding morning light...it was incredibly hot, with the atmosphere building up to some mischief!

The Southern Sable Hippotragus niger niger had a historical distribution South of the Zambezi river where it was common in suitable habitat of savanna woodland. Levaillant recorded them at Crooks Corner on December the 32nd 1832 when he noted "Le mouflon d'Afrique entouré notre camp et a menacé nos porteurs, exigeant friandises avant que nous avons été autorisés à traverser le puissant Limpopo ."

In later years, their Southern distribution was cut off by the controversial construction of Sable Dam, effectively cutting the population in two.

Beware that certain maps showing the purported pre-historical distribution of Sable are fakes as they only go back as far as 1980. Coincidentally, this is the same year that RP made his first foray into the wilds of Klopperfontein Dam at the ripe old age of 21.
