Thanks RP, Flutts, Lisbeth and Pumbaa for popping in ^Q^ \O

That day was a killer heat wise and I did do the aircon thing but when stopped at a crowded sighting the car is off, so I couldn't handle it at the leopard sighting <hot>

3rd Skukuza

We woke to a much cooler cloudy dark day which is never great for taking pics but it was a relief from the previous day.

The plan today was to simply drive to Lower Sabie, turn and come back for a bacon and egg breakfast in camp.

About halfway between Skukuza and the H12 Bridge we found our first male lion for the day cruising down the road.

He was on a mission so we followed along for another 1km and then he cruised down into the riverbed and out of sight.

We always slow down at drains with the hope of a hyena and on the odd occasion leopard, but today it was a mongoose that popped out and pulled a tongue and then some birds including a kingfisher.

About 3km from Nkuhlu we found a car stopped in a known leopard spot so we stopped also and the driver informed us that he just spotted 2 leopards and the 1 was dragging a kill behind a large bush tree thing in the riverbed so we quickly searched with binoculars and the 1 leopard was still visible through the twigs but 30 seconds later it moved deeper in and out of sight. We puzzled for another view, but the bush was just too dense so we moved on.

Just before Lubyelubye another 2 male lions were starting to stir.

The plan was too return the same way so we decided to move on and to get them again on the way back because they may have woken up a little more by then.

Just past Lubyelubye we found a cheetah parking off in the riverbed which surprised us because it’s in the middle of a lion/leopard hot spot.

The cheetah looked rather nervous and was looking around all the time and then she moved closer to the edge of the riverbed and it became a mission for a clear view spot so we eventually continued on.

Sunset Dam produced 5 lionesses on the hunt and they were seriously plotting some buffalo in the riverbed, but this was on the corner just before the road turns towards Lower Sabie camp so the entire Sunset Dam normal viewing crowd and those from Lower Sabie were there, so it was hectic, therefore we just snapped some pics as we drove through the gaps and strangely, escaped to Mugg & Bean for coffee.

The coffee break at Lower Sabie took about 20 minutes and then we were off towards Skukuza.

The lion from earlier had moved into the riverbed and they were some distance away so the crowd had spread out more and we decided to just cruise through as sleeping lions a long way off is not worth the crowd stress.

As we past Lubyelubye I wasn’t looking on the rocks because we just driven past slowly half an hour earlier and there was nothing there, but fortunately Bushpig was awake and she shouted “LEOPARD!”
