Nearly at the end of that road you will find a larger pond on the right hand side a bit hidden behind some bushes and same is always great for a short break as it is shady there and not directly at the road. Besides us today also a buffalo enjoyed the silence there

Image

and after we looked a bit around we also noticed a dabchick in the middle of the pond.

Image

We stayed there quite a while also to take a break from driving but after a while we continued and stop then again on the tar road as when turning into the left side there is a huge lake on the left side at least this year same was quite good filled up with water and soon we were fascinated by a couple of hippos

Image

Image

who were caught in a fight although same looked a bit more playful then a severe fight

Image

Image

and so we parked again along the roads side and Timon fired away and overall it was quite interesting

Image

to watch that spectacle and after a while both hippos again calmed down, dived and now nearly no hippos were any longer visible.

Image

After a couple of years in row were the S79 was closed we were very confident that same might be open this year and so it was. Never saw that much there but always a nice drive and especially the crossing of the N’watimhiri causeway is always more than nice and in same we discovered a juvenile saddle billed stork.

Image

We now drove via the tar road southwards and also drove through a couple of loops which led closer to the river and in one of those we noticed lots of white winged widowbirds,

Image

the reeds and the grass was high there and the river hardly visible but therefore lots of red billed queleas could be seen in another loop and

Image

in another loop which were carfree that day we also saw European rollers and were able to capture a melba finch – Lots of them were around too but they are always so difficult to photograph.

Due to the meanwhile prevailing midday heat it was in fact quiet although we drove along the river and obviously a lone elephant bull had mercy with us and we were allowed to photograph same whilst munching.

Image

Due to the lack of any other sightings we already reached Sunset dam and meanwhile we had again a clear blue sky we parked there and looked around and discovered a green shank,

Image

and a really close yellow billed storks resting on its knees

Image

whilst others could be seen farer away whilst hunting.

Image

An enormous number of crocodiles were lying at the waterfront and took a sunbath,

Image

the hippos were loud and some of the crocodiles even found a place to hide under a bush quite close to the parking area.

Image

Now we needed an urgent break at Lower Sabie camp but as it still was a bit too early for check in we drove to the Lower Sabie causeway and looked around there as same is always a lovely spot. The red bishops were plentiful although a bit too far away but we were rewarded with a fish eagle who just had caught a fish and flew by

Image

same soon landed with its catch on a dead fallen tree

Image

looked from right to left and from left to right again and obviously found it there far too uneasy

Image

took off again and now landed in a tree close to the end of the causeway whilst still looking around, however,

Image

Image

finally the fish eagle started to feed and Timon was again in his element in taking pictures from his favourite raptor.

Image

We as well as the fish eagle stayed there quite a while until same

Image

took off again with the remains of its fish and now same disappeared completely out of side.

Image

to be continued…….

It's always so entertaining watching the hippo "battles", tho' some do get pretty vicious. Love the fish eagle sequence w/ its prey - what a treat. :-0 :-0
