Our fourth day in Sicily was a beach day. First, we went to see the Scala dei Turchi (Turkish Steps). This is a rocky cliff on the southern coast of Sicily. The Scala is formed by marl, a sedimentary rock with a characteristic brilliant, white color. Wind and sea have worked this rock over time, creating a natural staircase. The reference to the Turks derives from the frequent raids carried out by marauding Arabs and Turks who found shelter in this bay.
Unfortunately, we couldn't climb the stairs as the visitor walkway had been closed and we didn't have our costumes on to wade through the waist-high water.
The nearby beach.
We then went to La Spiagetta, a beach in the area of Siculiana Marina.
First swim in the Mediterranean! The water was so calm and warm!
After soaking up some rays we headed to the beach bar for some refreshments.
All along the back of the beach is a high cliff of clay which visitors use as a natural skin treatment!
The Brat giving it a try.
Then it was back to the house where we picked almonds and figs. SO's aunt made fig jam that night and I brought a bottle home with me!
I'd never seen peaches like these before! They are called flat peaches or saturn peaches, and they were delicious!
SO's cousin then took us for a drive around the village to show us some family landmarks which included this farmhouse, where SO's father grew up!
And a view from the front.
The village of Santa Elisabetta.
