Once again the topic of speeding in the Kruger National Park. Have been at Punda for the last three days. On our way here and on our way to Croocks Corner and back yesterday I was amazed at how people were speeding on both tar and gravel roads. Today was a public holiday and the roads were full of vehicles with no traffic officials visible and the Section Ranger also not working on public holidays when they are needed most. We went on a sunset drive today and at 17h30 the number of vehicles stil way more than 30 min away from the nearest gate or camp all obviously speeding and some occupants openly drinking alcohol. Empty alcohol cans and bottles also laying all along the road. At approximately 19h00 we came upon a cheetah sighting on the Shingwedzi Punda road. The cheetah was calling and the guide informed us that he was probably calling his brother as there were always 2 cheetah in the area. To our utter dismay we found the other cheetah dead next to the road with evidence that it was hit by a car. Whilst we were sitting there, there were still cars approaching of which one was a game drive vehicle occupied by 3 men of whom 2 were in uniform and one in civilian clothes. The one in civilian clothes tried to hide the beer between his legs. They informed us that they were rangers from Vlakteplaas and that they arrested the driver of a VW Polo for poaching. Is KNP Management aware of any such arrest? Why are there no traffic officials on duty in this area which is known for accidents and speeding especially on a public holiday when they know that people will stream into the park. Why not train horenary rangers to act as traffic officials as clearly the Park personnel is seriously failing in this department. It is sad enough that just about all the lion prides in this area has been poached out. Now the predators that's left are being killed by speeding vehicles. If the driver of the vehicle was arrested as reported, I hope he is banned from the park for life.
