Major N4 upgrade complete ahead of the Festive Season

The triple phase project on the N4, which commenced in 2016, has been completed just ion time for the holiday season.

Trans African Concessions (TRAC) recently announced that upgrade of Section 6E, between Crossroads and Montrose in Elands Valley, has been completed.

The triple-phase project commenced in 2016 and included the construction of five kilometres of passing lanes, extensive rehabilitation work on 24 kilometres of pavement, the widening of culverts and bridges and ancillary work.

Due to the section’s topography permanent Stop/Go’s were in place during most of the construction, however road users can today testify that the temporary inconvenience was well worth it as the quality and standard of this section of the N4 is outstanding.

The section was completed on schedule and comes at the perfect time, just ahead of the Festive Season holiday period when traffic is expected to peak on the N4 Toll Route.


“Because TRAC prides itself on offering excellent road infrastructure, which is on par with international standards, work on improving and maintaining our road never ends. For this reason, several other construction and rehabilitation projects are ongoing and others are soon to commence,” said TRAC Spokesman, Solange Nicholson Soares.

Apart from routine crack sealing, repairs to the concrete road and shoulders are also being conducted on this section. TRAC does not foresee major traffic disruptions or delays due to this project, however road users can expect single lane closures on the eastbound and westbound carriageways and are thus urged to follow TRACN4 on Twitter for daily/hourly updates.

Schoemanskloof – Crossroads to Bambi

Rehabilitation of the existing road has commenced and is expected to be complete by August 2019. The project includes heavy rehabilitation of the existing road. A new asphalt overlay will be constructed over the entire road, including ramps and crossroads. Stop/Go’s will be implemented throughout the project.

Sections 16 A/B

Major rehabilitation work is still in progress, due to unplanned additional work being required. Ad-hoc Stop/Go’s are in place with the project expected to be completed before the start of the peak travel season.

Sections 19 and 20

The upgrade of the N4 in Maputo, Mozambique – also referred to as MDC Sections 19 and 20 – is ongoing. This extensive project includes comprehensive roadworks between the Shoprite Centre Intersection in Matola and the 16 of June Circle in Maputo. It also includes the construction of two more lanes (one in each direction), which will result in a six-lane carriageway.

The rehabilitation of the pavement and the widening of seven structures forms part of the construction, which is estimated to be concluded in June 2019. Given that this is the busiest section of the N4 Toll Route, managed by TRAC, there will be no lane closures.

However, lane deviations and the partial closure of intersections will require speed restrictions to ensure road users’ safety. The latter affects traffic flow and road users are urged to be cautious, vigilante and patient.

Roadworks on Schoemanskloof ongoing till August 2019

The roadworks on the Schoemanskloof pass towards Mbombela are back.

These are causing heavy traffic delays. The works start at the Crossroads turnoff heading towards Mbombela and end just before you reach De Beers Nek at the Bambi intersection.

TRAC spokesman, Solange Soares-Nicholson, said that it is part of the rehabilitation of the current road.


This project is scheduled to be completed by August 2019 and stop-and-go’s will be implemented to accommodate the traffic until that time.

According to TRAC’s website, routine maintenance will also be done on Schoemanskloof from Bambi to Montrose. There will also be stop-and-go’s here until the end of November.

N4 ‘killer road’ to get more policing

MBOMBELA – Drivers in Mpumalanga can expect a lot more traffic officers visible on the province’s identified “killer roads” as of next week.

According to MEC for community safety, security and liaison (DCSSL), Pat Ngomane, they face many challenges policing traffic on the province’s highways and in towns.

Most recently a driver, Moses Makamu, was charged with culpable homicide and drunk driving after he allegedly caused an accident which killed 15 people.

The Nkomazi victims were laid to rest over the weekend.


Ngomane told Lowvelder that some people change their driving behaviour when they see police and traffic officers on the road.

“It is very important that we put our resources there and put resources into awareness campaigns.”

So an increased volume of traffic officers will be placed on the identified roads as of next week.

Ngomane said they had planned the initiative to start in September already, but that it was delayed by labour negotiations. According to Ngomane, they intend to continue with the initiative indefinitely.

Their main focus will be on the N4 Toll Route. They will not be stationed in one place, but move around.

He added that it was also very important that road users take responsibility for their role in accidents.

“Some drivers act as though they are alone on the road. People, whether they are driving a car or public transport, must understand that the road has rules and they have to follow them to reduce crashes.”

Solange Soares-Nicholson, communications manager for TRAC, said they observe a “great deal” of moving violations by drivers, such as overtaking on double barrier lines, in both the gorge and Schoemanskloof.

She added that many fewer fatalities are reported on the N4 Toll Route these days, despite a significant increase in traffic volumes over the past 20 years, which signifies that the road has become safer.

In a year-on-year comparison between January and September 2017 and the same period this year, the average daily traffic count in Schoemanskloof was 7 400 per day for both years.

In 2017 there were 78 accidents, of which nine resulted in 17 fatalities. This year there were 103 accidents, of which seven resulted in 10 fatalities.
For both periods the most prominent causes were loss of control and negligent driving.

In the Crocodile River Gorge 27 accidents were recorded between January and September 2017. Two fatalities were recorded. This year, in the same period (and prior to the accident on October 26), the average daily traffic count increased from 12 400 to 13 000.

A total of 24 accidents took place, of which two resulted in three fatalities. TRAC noted that the most prominent causes were negligent driving, a loss of control and sleeping.

“The gorge section is a difficult area in which to conduct law enforcement, as there is very little space in the constrained areas to pull over offenders and there is no space for traffic officials to park in these areas,” Soares-Nicholson added.

Ngomane added that he was aware of streets in all municipalities in the province where accidents were frequent.

“Each municipality has traffic officers and we are encouraging them to work with us and the SAPS to try and integrate our work so that we don’t work in silos, but work together to find solutions,” he concluded.

I found the problem with the crocodile river gorge section is that it is narrow, with little opportunity to pass the many trucks using the route. People get impatient and..........

IMO......when the worked on the road a few years ago, the entire section should be 2 lanes both ways. Would make it a lot safer.

Did the trip up and down last week, using the Ngodwana option as there were meant to be roadworks on Schoemanskloof. No problems!

But Schoemanskloof is still better...

We found this road far more faster then the one via the waterfall road but in case they are still doing the road works we for sure will take the other option - Gadly there are two

Friend of mine travelled this way a few weeks ago, and stop and go still there apparently.

I used the “tunnel” route last September and it wasn’t too bad.
