According to the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS), the taxonomy of crocodiles is:
• Kingdom: Animalia
• Phylum: Chordata
• Class: Reptilia
• Order: Crocodylia
• Family: Crocodylidae
• Genera: Crocodylus, Mecistops and Osteolaemus
• Species: 13, including
o C. porosus (saltwater crocodile),
o C. acutus (American crocodile),
o C. niloticus (Nile crocodile),
o C. rhombifer (Cuban crocodile),
o M. cataphractus (African slender-snouted crocodile),
o O. tetraspis (African dwarf crocodile)
The Life Cycle of a Crocodile:
Stage 1 - Egg: sits in a nest on dry land protected by the mother who sits close by.
Hatchling: an animal that has just hatched from an egg.
Stage 2-Crocodile Youth (2-8 years)
Crocodiles grow and learn to hunt on their own.
Stage 3-Adult Crocodile
Crocodiles become an adult between 8-10 years old. An adult male is a huge creature and measures 6m long.
It is one of the largest reptiles in the world. They are fierce predators.
