Nyala Tragelaphus angasii
Estimated abundance in the Kruger Park: 300 (2009)
Status: not endangered.
Mass: ♂ 100-140 kg; ♀ 55-90 kg.
Shoulder height: ♂ 1-1.2 m; ♀ 0.8-1.1 m.
Distinguishing features: Bulls have a long, erect dorsal crest (grey-brown up to the shoulders, then white-tipped) exrending from the head to the tail base. A fringe of long, grey-black hair extends from the throat to between the hindlegs. Ewes have a very short, brown-black dorsal crest, extending from head to tail base.
Life-span: ± 15 years.
Predators: Main predators include lion, leopard, wild dog and spotted hyena.
Kruger Park distribution: Found in suitable habitat in ecozones H (Riverine communities), M (Alluvial plains), N (Sandveld communities) and O (Tree mopane savanna) of the Kruger, and marginally along waterways into ecozones I (Lembobo Mountain bushveld) and L (Mopane shrubveld). Common along the Limpopo, Luvuvhui and Shingwedzi rivers, in mountainous terrain north of Punda Maria and in Nyandui sandveld south of Pafuri, Smaller population densities occur along the Sabie River and in the Tshokwane/Orpen Dam area.

Estimated abundance in the Kruger Park: 90 (2009)
Status: SA Red Data Book listing: Endangered. IUCN listing: Least Concern.
Mass: ♂ 260-300 kg; ♀ 220-280 kg.
Shoulder height: ♂ 1.4-1.5 m; ♀ 1.3-1.4 m.
Distinguishing features: Distinctive black and white facial mask, brownish-black face, with a white patch over the muzzle, mouth and chin; and a white patch extending from the base of the horns through the eyes onto the cheeks. Ears are long and narrow (measuring 30 cm) with dark brwon tassels at the tips.
Life-span: ± 15 years.
Predators: Main predator is lion. Other predators include leopard, wild dog, spotted hyena and crocodile. Roan are extremely susceptible to Anthrax.
Kruger Park distribution: Occur in ecozones L (Mopane shrubveld) and P (Mopane/bushwillow woodlands) of the Kruger Park, with the major concentration in the Basalt plains adjoining the Lembobo Mountains in the Eastern parts of the park. A herd is also found around Babalala.
Different explanations have been provided for the decline of Roan and its lack of subsequent recovery in the Kruger National Park (450 animals in 1986 to around 30 in 2001).

Estimated Abundance in the Kruger Park: 500 (2009)
Status: not endangered.
Mass: ♂ 40-80 kg; ♀ 25-60 kg.
Shoulder height: ♂ 0.7-1 m; ♀ 0.65-0.95 m.
Distinguishing features: Characteristic white patch on throat, a horizontal band at the base of the neck, white spots below the eyes and near the base of the ears, white lips and a white chin.
Life-span: ± 12 years.
Predators: Main predators include lion, leopard, crocodile and spotted hyena. Yougs fall also prey to baboon, civet, caracal and python.
Kruger Park distribution: Patchily distributed over all the ecozones of the Kruger Park. Highest population densities are found in the riverine forests on the Sabie, Luvuvhu and Limpopo rivers, and in well-wooded areas near Punda Maria and Pretoriuskop.

Status: not endangered.
Mass: ♂ 190-310 kg; ♀ 130-215 kg.
Shoulder height: ♂ 1.3-1.5 m; ♀ 1-1.4 m.
Distinguishing features: Sides marked with a distinctive series of 6-10 white vertical stripes, lail bushy and black-tipped with white underside. Ears very large and rounded. Long, majestic spiral homs of mature bulls are unique.
Life-span: ± 15 years.
Predators: Main predators include lion, leopard, wild dog and spotted hyena. Yougs fall also prey to cheetah, serval and caracal.
Kruger Park distribution: Found in suitable habitat in all the ecozones of the Kruger Park, but only in small numbers in ecozone L (Mopane shrubveld).
