99 rhino were poached in KwaZulu-Natal last year 14 more than in 2013.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife says ten of the killings took place during the month of December, including over the Christmas period.
He says eight of these rhinos were on private game reserves, adding that this has been a growing trend they have seen over the past year.
Ezemvelo's Cedric Coetzee who is the manager of rhino security in KZN explains the main goal they have for this year on the anti-poaching front.
''The one we do want to keep down is rhino poached to below 2% of total population. That means that we hope to ensure that they're still growing faster that they're being poached.
In other words, we still in a sustainable situation but we've got to keep that as our major goal and keep it under the 2%. Our rhino grow between 5%and 7% in terms of the population in the province,'' he said.

Community participation seen as key in tackling poaching

At least eight rhinos have been poached since the beginning of this year in various game reserves in KwaZulu Natal.
KwaZulu-Natal Ezemvelo Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo, says nine rhinos were poached this time last year.
Mntambo says community participation is vital in tackling rhino poaching.
“We are continuing implementing our strategies to stop rhino poaching like working with the community we've put aside an amount of R100 000 for info leading to the arrest and prosecution of anybody who wanted to poach our rhino.”
Last year, 1215 rhino were poached in South Africa.
Meanwhile, private game owners have intensified their call for the legalisation of rhino horn sales. This is as the poaching scourge is spreading to Namibia and Botswana.
Both governments have launched a man-hunt for an alleged Namibian poaching king pin linked to the slaughter of elephants in Botswana's Chobe National Park. Experts say illegal wildlife trade generates an estimated R200 billion a year.

State-owned parks hit hardest by rhino poachers

The latest rhino poaching statistics, released by Project Rhino KZN, indicate that the number of rhinos killed between January 1 and June 15, in the province is almost the same as last year’s numbers for the same period.
According to the conservation group, KwaZulu-Natal has lost 49 rhino, two up from 47 over the same period last year, Zululand Observer reported.
This year 42 white and seven black rhino were killed, compared to 42 white and five black rhino last year.
State-owned parks have been hardest hit this year, with a reported total of 41 rhino being poached in these reserves, compared to 31 last year and eight on private land.
Last year 16 rhino were poached on private reserves.
Since the beginning of the year, authorities have arrested 25 suspected poachers and have recovered 11 firearms in various operations. Last year 36 people were arrested and 24 firearms recovered over the same period.
This after Environment Minister Edna Molewa last month announced more rhino were poached in South Africa during the first four months of 2015 than in the same period last year, according to an AFP report.
“By the end of April 2015, the number of rhino we lost to poachers was 393 for the whole country,” Molewa said during a press briefing. She added 290 of the 393 rhino were poached in the Kruger National Park (KNP).
A week prior to Molewa’s announcement, South African National Parks (SANParks) spokesperson Rey Thakhuli announced 62 people had been arrested in KNP by that point.
