The pig scouted around our braai area for another few minutes and then it cruised off towards the other units in the distance, so we called it a night and went to bed.

Lovely cheetah sequence and as always, your storytelling is superb. The bushpig stories are always hilarious

Saturday 22nd March

The plan this morning was to head down to viewpoint 17 and then loop around to 25 via the road between 20 & 21 and then continue towards Mpafa hide before returning to camp. The entire loop with the current road conditions and stops is around 3 to 4 hours depending on sightings.

What we also hadn’t factored in was the “gate” opening times and once again the map book stated 6am, the paperwork in the unit also stated 6am, but the booking in form stated 5am. At around 5:15am I heard another car in the distance leaving camp, so we cruised out at around 5:30am and found out later that the correct opening time for March is 5am.

The drive started out rather quietly with only the usual local popping up, however it was a beautiful morning and there weren’t any other cars on the road, so we just cruised along slowly and I stopped for the odd “bird” and local which always puts me in the good books with the Cow.

First up was a martial posing in the morning sun, then some giraffe, a legless skink which we normally see on the roads in the morning after a few days of rain, a pair of tawnies, a Burchell’s calling it’s head off, and then a large ellie that was surrounded by small flying bugs right next to the road.

We got to marker 25 much earlier than expected since it was a slow 1st hour sighting wise, so we decided to head down the dead-end section towards markers 26 & 27 before turning around at the dead-end/27 to head back towards Mpafa hide.

Around 1km down the dead-end road we spotted a head peeking over a dip in the road up ahead, so I instantly slowed and the penny dropped with the Cow who jumped on the walkie talkie to Hawkeyes.

“Cheetah in the road! Quickly come up behind us!”

While I slowly approached another cheetah popped out the bush and also collapsed down on the road. I didn’t want to get to close to them as I feared that we would chase them off the road, so I slowly pulled off to the side of the road and inched forward before stopping and switching off.
