AW Photo Competition Safari Winner Trip

Right, so we drove in darkness for the last kilometer or two and eventually the twinkling lights of the camp could be seen through the bush. A welcome sight, it had been a long day out there, but a most enjoyable one. An extended day in the bush does wonders for the soul and our stomachs were grumbling thinking about the fine dinner lined up for the evening.

We offloaded the now empty cooler boxes and Sprocky got stuck into lighting the already set fire as RP headed for the kitchen to prepare his by now famous dish of snacks. The evening was much warmer than the previous night, so no rushing for the tents to get jackets, we would all sit and enjoy the early evening around the camp fire.

By now Leachy had lubricated his vocal cords and proceeded to musically remind us of all the old songs, going as far back as My Fair Lady and the Sounds of Music for a bit of culture, mixed in with Bob Dylon, Donavan and Cat Stevens' Peace Train. We were all very mellow, enjoying the company and the surroundings, totally relaxed.

Mary had done a great job of tidying up after us in camp and Joseph had set the fire with some good wood from the wood pile.

Back in camp after a long day, it was time to sort out the menu. This evening it was decided that I would be on fire duty again, RP would cook up some more spuds and the Boss will be in charge of the meat and salad.

The Boss knocked our socks off with an absolutely amazing Ceasars Salad!



He later mentioned that the salad would have been even better if he added a few anchovies to it. My personal opinion is that those little fishy things would have messed up a great salad.

All the food was perfect once again and the fillets were done exactly how I enjoy all my meat, just slightly warmed up over the fire.

No more photos were taken this evening and we just sat around the fire talking and singing, and a lot more singing, forcing us to lubricate the vocal chords every so often with some Jagermeister.

this evening was a blast from the past and indy showed us that he has another passion

besides conservation...........

richprins just kept saying how he wished he had younger company... as he did not know any of the songs we knew...........

i am quite pleased about that........ 'cause we were spared his accompaniment.....

but seriously though...

it was an evening of excellent food....

pleasant beverages...

and great company.....

Ja, RP also got a bit green around the gills when I mentioned the anchovies, but the fact remains that when chopped up very fine you cannot actually taste, them, but they add that little something to a Caeser.

A fine culinary experience with Fillet Steak, rare for Leachy, Sprocky and self and cremated for RP, along with the best Wors in the lowveld, Caesar Salad and RP's by now, famous Spuds. Followed by Mel's furniture polish for desert.

Dinner done, we returned to the fire to thoroughly enjoy the rest of the evening. It doesn't get any better than this. Thanks to you 3 guys.

Flutters, I'm sure that one of the girls could do the next one, it would only be an improvement on Cadbury.

Lets hear from the winner if it was worth it. But, it is all part of the bigger plan.

Maybe we should wrap up Saturday night. It ended up being a moment of song and more song, then slowly paths were negotiated to the tents. Our first departure was the Master, followed shortly by, beleive it or not, the Boss. This left me to entertain the Boon around the fire. Luckily it was a short lived moment, RP was very sick and the more cough mixture he was fed the sooner he realised that he was now bed ridden. I still can't understand how he missed that pool two nights in a row. Once I was sure that RP had reached his tent, I started clearing evidence and made my way to my tent. Surprisingly it was only shortly after 10 when I retired for the night.

Only one more morning of this great trip lay ahead.
