A decent exposure is controlled by three factors ie;-

1. Volume of light,
2. time of exposure and
3. sensitivity off material expoised/abused,...

Set Fred aimed at a well lit subject,....
in the case of a manual lense attached take a series of pictures
altering only the F stop ring!!!.. then in play back seek the best shot
and note the .F stop!!

Set the manual ring of your camera to that reading, F stop,...
repeat a series of shots, altering exposure time only!!...

you will realise a closer connection to your actions, then.......
pick a speed best realised in previous and enter..........
you will find yourself at the threshold of sensitivity, regarding
your, Fred.,......now ISO will forever remain a dark and distant
abbreviation, but heck do not blame me when your newly acquired
goes,.... pop

I did take my pictures, though not of any eagle, but a lovely dove... -O

I won't paste the pics, as there was no change in the pictures. What was interesting is the change my camera made to it's own shutter speed settings.
The increased aperture kept my pic unchanged and adapted the shutter speed...

Taken in AV - I only changed the f.stops
F6.3 to F/10 - the shutter speed was 1/320
F/14 to F/20 - the shutter speed changed to 160
up to F/29 - the s.s. changed to 1/30

So - this is a question - I need to know what shutter speed I want and set the f.stop accordingly?

Panning - I would need a slow shutter speed (more light) of about 1/40 and therefore I must go to F11
Freezing - I would need a faster shutter speed (less light) of about 1/500 and must therefore go for F4

This is a formula I found, and I will memorize only these four, for the time being.

f4 - 1/250 ss
f5.6 - 1/125 ss
f8 - 1/60 ss
f11 - 1/30 ss


Time to take a deep breath...

more light - lots of depth of field / less light - sharper points and for landscapes.

Amoli, white balance (while we can still call it that) is for advanced techniques. I only use auto white balance, unless I want to create a special effect, which I never really bother with. White balance as far as I know will not affect your exposure, only your colour balance. This is where the boffins will step in. As Dewi has done already.

On your exposure problem, please post an example and if possible your camera settings.

I will try and photograph at midday and then increase the exposure rate - sure it will straighten out that problem.

like you I made some tests... with sparrows

like you I can't change the speed in AV
so I tested "manuel" and here victory I can change... normal is that Dewi tryed to explain to us

I put F11 - 1000 ASA - 3200 - the sun was behind.... is not so bad
but need long time for setting and if it was a rare bird...

Not quite Amoli...

If you are using Av, then you select the aperture that you want, for depth of field, the camera will select the correct shutter speed for the lighting conditions.

If you want to select a shutter speed then you use Tv, in this setting the camera selects the correct aperture.

For action shots, TV is normally best and for more static shots Av can be used. This is not a rule, just a suggestion.

One other rule of thumb, when shooting hand held (no tripod or bean bag) always use a focal length shorter than the shutter speed.

Example: 1/125s, use a focal length less than 125mm, 1/500s focal length less than 500mm.

This will eliminate camera shake, which gives you blurd pics.
