The post-moterm results of the lion that was shot at the Berg en Dal Living quarters on 12 March 2020:The lion had a swollen left stifle joint with corrosive lesions to the cartilage of the medial and lateral condyles of the distal femur, usually associated with tuberculosis.

A single granulomatous lesion was found in the left lung, also related to TB. Several pelvic lymph nodes appeared cystic and samples were collected for TB. Stomach contents consisted of impala hair and some bones. The intestines were virtually empty causing the lion to be hungry.

The multiple shots that were fired 1st, were in attempt to coax the lion out of the premises, along with other tactics. The ranger acted to the best of his ability under the circumstances to ensure the lion does not harm anyone.

An investigation into how the lion gained access into the premises was also conducted. The gate was NOT left opened, the animal pushed his way in.

Attempting the option to dart the lion at 2:00am, ment that; a helicopter would have to ferry the Vet into Berg en Dal, further aggravating the lion, which could have acted in a harmful way.

Hippo killed on N4 between Nelspruit and Malelane

MBOMBELA – A male hippopotamus was killed in a four car crash between Mbombela and Malalane at about 06:30 this morning.

According to the N4 TRAC communications manager, Solange Soares, the crash occurred between the Valencia Link and Crocodile Valley directional interchange.


Two light motor vehicles were involved in the crash and a stop-and-go put in place to regulate the early morning traffic as officials worked to clear the scene.

Soares said that the hippopotamus was crossing the eastbound towards westbound and is believed to have come out of the river.

“Four cars were involved in the crash, a truck, bakkie and two sedans. The drivers sustained slight injuries and the hippo died on the scene,” she said.

The last two vehicles involved were a secondary accident.

Soares added that this was the second time this year that a hippopotamus had been struck by a vehicle on the same stretch of road.

“The first one happened on February 8, about a kilometre from today’s incident,” she concluded.
