Nylsvley Nature Reserve is a hotspot for Roan and Tsessebe antelope and acts as an important breeding site for both species. During the latest aerial survey of the NNR, conducted in 2012, 105 individuals of Tsessebe were recorded and during the dry season they are easy to find in the reserve.

Tsessebe will often be seen with mud on their horns...they obsessively dig in the mud, ostensibly for territorial reasons?

A number of tsessebe were captured in the North and transferred to the Hlangwine rare antelope camp near Pretoriuskop, presumably as a safeguard should disease strike in the north. This was all the rage in the 80's and 90's, with eland sort of included in the programme, later Liechtenstein's, and lastly reedbuck, for different reasons!

All were released eventually, and all except eland hold on around PK, surprisingly!

Ithala Game Reserve is the only Ezemvelo reserve where Tsessebe occur. The current population numbers 130. During 1978 12 animals (3 males and 9 females) were released in Ithala, followed by a second introduction of 11 (3 males and 8 females) in 1981.
