Time to get sand under our feet in the desert

The dunes in the Namib desert range from 100m to 388m high and are amongst the tallest dunes in the world Big Daddy is the tallest dune in the Sossusvlei area; it is around 325m and it faces a dune known as ‘Big Mama’ The desert is composed of 5 million year old sand originating from the Kalahari desert The winds are slowly but constantly changing the shape of the dunes Dune 45 is 80 meters tall The sand colour in Sossusvlei range from grey to red. The red colour comes from a high iron oxide content in the soil. The older the dune is, the more red it will appear The scorched black trees in Deadvlei are over 900 years old and are only standing because the wood is too dry to decompose Dune 45 is known as a star dune In 2002 Sossusvlei was included in ‘Southern Namib erg’ submission to the UNESCO World Heritage list. It currently sits on the UNESCO tentative list It is popular to climb Dune 45 in the early morning to watch the sunrise Thick fog from the Atlantic ocean will often cover the dunes. This fog creates enough moisture for a number of species to survive As the clay pan does not allow water filtration, when there is a heavy rainfall a lake will form and will remain for a long time Dune 45 appears in the movie ‘The Cell’ One of the great things about Sossusvlei is that its surroundings have been left unspoiled, there are no shops or cement pathways to be seen for miles.
