Cape town and back - a pictorial road trip

Post by Peter Connan »

This is not going to be a trip report in the normal sense of the word, merely a collection of bird photos from the places we visited.
Basically, the route was as follows:

We left JHB on the 16th, travelled to the Camdeboo national park, where we spent two nights.
From there to Outdshoorn (via Meiringspoort), where we spent the night at Kango Mountain Resort.
From there to Prins Albert via the Swartberg pass, spending the night at a campsite just outside of town.
From there to Stellenbosch where we stayed for the next two weeks or so.

I managed to visit the Strandfontein sewerage works twice while there, but never got to the botanical gardens during the day-time (although we did carols by candlelight there).

On the way back we spent a night in Karoo national park, and then three nights at a friend who farms near Clocolan.

Awesome! I'm in O/\

That tit babbler shot is totally amazing! Considering that they never ever sit still, you did a brilliant job capturing it like that. \O

Now for the "two weeks or so" at Stellenbosch... I wonder if the fact that you'll find plenty of vineries plays a role in the fact that
you're being a bit vague about the exact period of time you spent there. =O: ^0^

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.

Fast food. Kentucky Fast Rat.Or maybe it should have been KFG, as it's probably a gerbil. There were lots about, even in the campsite.

There were lots of raptors the first evening, Black-shouldered Kites, a swarm of Lanners and some Rock Kestrel, as well as Steppe Buzzard:

In the campsite there were chin-spot Batis:

Fiscal Flycatcher, Acacia Pied Barbet, the Tit-babbler already shown and vast number of sunbirds, almost all either youngsters or females. The only ones I could positively identify were one male Lesser Double-collared and a few Malachites:

Hi Peter,

Your batis looks like a Pririt, which is more likely at Camdeboo.

Kind regards,

Adam
