If the wood is properly treated it will! Maybe it has to be 8mm I don't know, but in Switzerland, especially in the mountains, you'll find engraved wooden boards all over the place and they last. I think that they use to kind of burn the engraved letters in order to make them show better.

Pewter is too expensive and difficult to incise. You'll need a professional engraver with the right tools.
