Aat and Elly 2019 TR - 4 Hunting Cheetah

Trip to Kruger NP 2019 New series of Stories

04 – Hunting Cheetah

First of all a Healthy, Happy and Wonderful 2020 !

It’s always great to see a Cheetah. This story is about 3 Cheetah in the North, more specific close to Mopani on and along the main road.
It was late afternoon and we just returned from Letaba towards out camp Mopani.

A bit chatting about what we have seen and suddenly quiet and next to me a lovely ohhhhh…

A beautiful cheetah just next to the road. Then it was all going very fast, the mother crossed the road and as a big surprise two cubs (young adults) followed her , coming out of “nothing”.
It was difficult to make photos because of the backlight at that side of the road. Because we did not know where they were going I could make this photo of the two young ones.

It looked as they were on a mission and we thought this was it….
But……….. mommy Cheetah decided to come back to the road.

No other cars around, so a nice private show with mom and het kids

And

It was clear they were on hunt , looking around , standing still and listen….
Then they decided (mom did) and kids were following to go to the other side of the road. I was happy with that because the light was much better this way to make photos

3 Cheetah in line …

And again waiting, listening, looking around and here it looks like mom said …quiet !!

This was going on for some time and they did not move much. Nice opportunity to capture both kids.

Then suddenly mom got up and moved forward in “hunting mode” as you can see.
( I love to see a cheetah like this )

Here I just can tell what happened because it was impossible to really follow mom cheetah. About 50 meters away a small group of Waterbuck was the reason mom cheetah tried to catch one of the young ones but did not succeed. The young cheetah were following and tried to catch up with mom. A bit later they came back again but mom was ahead and we could not see her immediately.

About 100 meters ahead we saw the waterbuck crossing the road towards the riverbed. The young ones crossed the road too and a bit later, the last we could see, was mom cheetah crossing the road and they all went to the riverbed.

And like many other times …Mopani never lets you down… smileeeeeeeeeee

Hope you enjoyed it and see you next story, AWD ??
