For that short distance we needed today a bit longer as there was so much to be seen and suddenly I shouted: “Roan!” What a day today after the two different cat sightings only earlier and then roan as well.

Image

It were two of them still a bit far away but roan are roan

Image

after only two single roan sightings so far we were extreme happy to see them again.

Image

One of the roan already started to walk deeper into the thick mopane bushes but gladly the other one still stayed a bit longer and started to feed on some bushes.

Image

I simply love their yoda ears! Another car joined us and also stayed with us as long as the roan was visible.

Image

The brilliant half an hour we were allowed to spent with this beautiful antelope was amazing and after same then disappeared complete into the bush we talked a bit with the other guy in the car

Image

who was also very thrilled by that sighting. That area is always good for some surprises and sometimes it is paying off to drive some detours. Shipandani hide was then next on our schedule and gladly at the crossing there was still a lot of water left and here we got entertained by a couple of black crakes.

Needless to say that we enjoyed the presence of these birds very much

Image

and after we got our shots we paid a short visit to the hide itself but did not stay long there as it was simply nothing to be seen but we had another tsessbe sighting just behind the river crossing as suddenly

Image

a group of them appeared between the mopane bushes

Image

and allowed us to take some close up shots.

Image

Then we needed a break from driving and entered Mopani camp for an ice cream break as well and to stretch the legs a bit and overall it meanwhile heated up and it was once again one of those extreme hot days. In camp Timon discovered this strange looking tree trunk,

Image

another squirrel,

Image

a very loud brown headed parrot and also the paradise flycatcher couple was flying around but same could not be captured as they were simply too active.

Image

Needless to say that we once again drove into the direction of Mooiplaas but the roan could not be found again but nearly at the same spot where we met them earlier a group of tsessebe was around

Image

and also this antelope meant it well with us today as we never saw that much and different herds in that area before.

Image

to be continued....
